The Maze Runner
The Maze Runner uses a range of elements that contribute to the mise-en-scene which helps introduce the movie to the audience. Right at the start, the main character Thomas, played by Dylan O'Brien, is in a metal cage containing random objects. A close-up shot of Thomas' face is used to show his facial expression. Then a medium shot is used to show us the cage which helps us see that he is trapped and cannot do anything about it as there is no way out. The fact that the audience itself doesn't really know where Thomas is, creates intrigue. The audience is also even more intrigued when we see what is in the cage - random objects such as metal barrels, crates and rope. These objects are used to confuse the audience about where Thomas came from and where he is going. While Thomas is in the cage, a canted camera angle is used to create a sense of confusion/unpleasantness.
Then when the cage comes up, a tilt camera movement is used to show Thomas looking up at the others that are standing slightly above him. A high camera angle is used to show the other people which implies that they hold dominance over Thomas. This angle contrasts to the camera angle used when Thomas is shown as the camera angle used for Thomas is low. Moreover the people that are looking at Thomas are all wearing worn-out clothes which suggests they've been where they are for quite some time. Tight framing is used when the people at looking down at Thomas which insinuates that Thomas feels claustrophobic.
After Thomas gets up, he attempts to run away from the crowd of people. A trucking camera movement is used to with a close up shot to intensify Thomas running The close-up is used to help the audience understand how he is feeling which is worried and confused.
Thomas then falls over and after he gets up, loose framing is used to emphasise the size of the walls of the maze that he is now trapped in. This creates a claustrophobic feeling.
